| 1 | 8888.0096.0000.00 | documents | Lumber Industry Documents:BackgroundThe mate | Lumber Industry Documents:BackgroundThe material in this collection was acquired by purchase from various sources. It consists of two receipts, a time-keeper's book, a book listing lumber sales and shipments, a ledger of 304 pages, and a sheet found in the time-keepers book listing expenses for trips.Scope and ContentThe two receipts are dated 28 September and 30 November 1829 and refer to the receipt on board the sloops Eagle and True Guide of stated quantities of corded oak wood. In both cases the oak wood is for Justes Lowery, apparently of Hall's Landing. The only information about the vessels and Lowery is that contained in the receipts themselves. The location of Hall's Landing is not known. The book listing lumber sales and shipments by K. C. Rice of Craddockville, VA, dates from August 1916 to April 1918, and describes the transactions in detail. Craddockville is located at the head of Craddock Creek, about four miles west northwest of Belle Haven, VA. Most of the lumber, which largely consisted of 35- to 75-foot pilings or "sticks", was shipped by rail, although some was rafted. There are frequent references to Pennsylvania Railroad "car" numbers. Shipments were mostly from such Eastern Shore of Virginia points as Birds Nest Station, Nassawadox Station, Eastville Station, and Machipongo Station. Destinations included Newark and Harrison, NJ, Boston, MA, Buffalo, NY, and Mahanoy City, PA. Some of the "sticks" were sold under contract to the U. S. Government. The time-keeper's book covers the period from April 1910 through October 1910 and November 1912. It lists K. C. and John W. Rice, as well as a number of other employees. It gives the number of days worked per month. Each month is divided into two parts. Although the printed format contains a column for pay "rate per day", no rates are entered, nor is there an entry in the column for total amounts paid. The name K. C. Rice has been entered on the flyleaf at the back of the book. The ledger, which apparently is from the L. J. Houston & Co. of Stockton, MD, covers the period from January 1902 through December 1907. Stockton lies about eleven miles south of Snow Hill, MD, and about three miles north of the Virginia border. The ledger reflects monetary entries for a number of individuals and organizations whose names are shown in an alphabetical index at the front of the volume. In addition, sections of the ledger at pp. 193-209 and 302-304 list weekly rental income for 1909-1910 and1904-1906 respectively. One BoxFolder 1- Two receipts: (1) dated 28 Sept 1829 for eighteen and one half cords of oak wood received on board the sloop True Guide at Hall's Landing by W. | No image URL. | View | ||||
| 2 | 8888.0072.0000.00 | documents | Lester R. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Tro | Lester R. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Trott collection is divided among two categories: advertisements and correspondence relating to the companies that he advertised for while running an ad business in Annapolis in the late 1940s to early 1950s, and articles and internal correspondence for Chesapeake Appreciation, Inc., the group in charge of Chesapeake Appreciation Days (CAD). Trott worked with the CAD in the late 1970s when employed by the state Department of Economic and Community Development. Additional materials in the collection include miscellaneous papers from his stint as an advertising man for The Skipper magazine, papers collected while active with the Annapolis Power Squadron, and one document from his brief career as a yacht broker. Biographical BackgroundMr. Lester R. Trott, (born 1918) was involved throughout his life in several aspects of maritime business and promotion on the Chesapeake Bay. A lifelong resident of Annapolis, Maryland, he is a life charter member of the Annapolis Power Squadron dating back to the early 1940s. Starting in the late 1940s he started his own advertising firm, Lester R. Trott, Advertising, which handled promotion and advertising for local businesses. His principal account was for Chesapeake Vacation Cruise of Annapolis but also included Weems Navigation, Tidewater Cruises [?] (of Ephrata PA), John Trumpy & Sons, and many others, not necessarily maritime. He is also one of the founders of the magazine The Chesapeake Skipper (later The Skipper), the first yachting magazine on the Chesapeake (first issue July 1947). After closing his business he joined the staff, working as production manager from December 1951 to February 1952 and thereafter in advertising sales with Henry T. Meneely until March 1953. Leaving the magazine he started another business, this time as a yacht broker. At the time there was only one other yacht broker in business in Annapolis - Annapolis Yacht Sales. Among the boats he handled distributionship for was the Little Mariner, a small plywood outboard cruiser made by Mariner Cruiser of Maryland. He closed the brokerage and returned to the magazine in November 1956 as advertising manager, remaining there until July 1961. Thereafter, he worked as a director of special events and the special projects manager in the Maryland Department of Economic and Community Development, Division of Tourist Development. One of the projects he helped promote was the Chesapeake Appreciation Days, strongly represented in this collection. He remained in this capacity until retirement in 1980. | 5 | 8888.0016.0000.00 | documents | Albert E. Brown and Bro Papers<CR><CR>The collection i | Brown, Albert __Creator | Exact 02/01/1988 - | Albert E. Brown and Bro Papers<CR><CR>The collection is comprised of some of the correspondence and business papers concerning the Brown's Sail Loft in Winona, Maryland. Included are many sail plans for work and recreational boats. These papers were retrieved by museum staff from the derelict sail loft with the permission of the owner. Many are damaged or, deteriorated.Biographical BackgroundAlbert E. Brown and Bro/ sail.1oft~:~was located at Wenona, on the southern tip of the island. The Loft was founded in 1870 by Capt. John Stubbs. In 1890 he was bought out by Henry Brown, born in England, and who served as a seaman in the Royal Navy. He learned the art of sailmaking when he came to the United States during the Civil War and joined the United States Navy.Henry constructed the present building. When he retired in 1919 his son Albert took over the sail loft. Albert's son Henry, in turn, started at the loft when he was 12 years old and took over the business in 1956. Henry G. Brown retired about 1980 and the building has stood empty ever since. In 1986 the old sail loft changed hands. In its heyday, the business was one-of the region's leading sailmakers and had a reputation for old-fashioned, quality workmanship. Orders for sails came from all across the country and from overseas.Scope and ContentThis material represents those papers that were salvagable and that remained in the sail loft after the business had closed. They give considerable insight into the operation of one of the country's most well-known sailmakers. The majority of the papers are correspondence written to the sail loft concerning orders for sails, frequently accompanied by a sail plan and an estimate. Of value are a number of sail plans for the oyster dredging fleet, that the loft kept on file for repeat orders, and letters concerning well-known Bay yachts. Many of these boats have long since disappeared. Sail Loft Amps (1923 - 1974)Brown Papers, p 2An index of boats is available.Correspondence was filed under boat name where it was known, and by correspondent's last name if-no specific boat was mentioned (except for one" design boats which are filed under class name).Other papers include"account books and miscellaneous business papers which provide an overview of 1"the finances of a traditional sailmaking business.Sub'ectsSailmaking Subject: Albert E. | 6 | 8888.0018.0000.00 | documents | Ernest Tucker (1913 - 1981) Papers (1936 - 1979) | Range, Exa 01/01/1936 - 12/31/1979 | Ernest Tucker (1913 - 1981) Papers (1936 - 1979)The collection is comprised of correspondence, newspaper articles, brochures, etc., concerning Ernest Tucker's career as a boat designer and sailor. Also included are photographs of Tucker-designed boats, power and sailing boatsand Chesapeake Bay boatbuilders. The papers were donated to the Museum by his widow, Jane Foster Tucker.Biographical BackgroundErnest Tucker was born on the family estate, Hilton, in Walbrook, a northwestern section of Baltimore. He contracted polio before the age of 2 and was required to wear braces on both legs.Tucker developed a strong interest in boatbuilding and design from an early age. He built his first boat, a 12'5" sailing skiff when only twelve. He attended Johns Hopkins University, School of Mechanical Engineering, 1933-1938.In 1942:, he was employed by the Owens Yacht Co., Dundalk, as project engineer for 36' LCVP's for the Navy. After the war he designed the Owens 40' auxiliary cutter. In 1946 Tucker started at the Annapolis Yacht Yard as draughtsman (which later was sold to John Trumphy and Sons) and worked on many famous boats such as Makarra and Lenore, a famous Presidential yacht.Tucker purchased his beloved double-ended Nassau-built sloop, Half Pint, in 1945, which he used to sail the Bay until the time of his death. In 1958 he became self-employed. His designs included the Dickerson 35, 36, 40 and 41 for the William Dickerson Yard of Fishing Creek (laterTrappe). Always found on the drawings was his trademark, a flying duck. Tucker also made drawings for John Bailey of Tunis Mills, Marine Contractor. After the death of his mother, Ernest Tucker lived on a houseboat in Galesville, Md., was married in 1960, and in 1962 moved to Oxford. The designer was a good friend of C. Lowndes Johnson, noted Talbot County Comet class designer, and his wife Clara. He was a founding member of the Classic Yacht Club of America, member of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, and Tred Avon Yacht Club. Ernest Tucker died in August 1981.Scope and ContentThe material is divided into two parts. The first consists of biographical information and information on boats designed by Ernest Tucker. Included in the latter is the well-known series of Dickerson ketches built by DickersonBoatbuilders of Trappe, Maryland. Other designs include deadrise workboats built by Chesapeake Marine Industries of Trappe, and the famous Owens cutters.Ernest Tucker was also a recorder of many varities of sailing and power crafton the Chesapeake through the medium of the camera. Many of these boats no longer exist. Also of value are photographs of many well-known Bay boatbuilders, particularly from Dorchester County. An index of boats is available. The photographs have been divided up into broad subject categories.SubjectsBoatdesigning Boatbuilding Subject: Mrs Ernest Tucker | No image URL. | View | |||

In 1902 the property was acquired by James W. Jackson who in turn transferred it to his parents in 1961. In 1925 it came under the ownership of George Franklin Jackson, brother of James. From 1906 until 1952 George F. Jackson served as the Island pharmacist. He also served as local Registrar of Births and Deaths. When he died in 1952 the business continued as a general store operated by Elsie and James Walter Jackson, until 1972 when it closed.Scope and ContentThe material is somewhat heterogeneous, but some of it is connected with the family business and gives an insight into life on Tilghman Island in the early 20th century. Particularly interesting is the account book of a pound-net fishing business (1921-23) and the guest register for "Riverdale" Hotel (1906-08). The former shows sales of fish, wages and other expenses.SubjectsCommercial fishing, hotel operation PapersFolder 1 Account book (1921-23) of fishing business started as a partnership of George F. | 25 | 8888.0136.0000.00 | records (documents) | Gray and Waller Packing Co Records, 1900-1940s | 1900-1940 | Scope and Content: The collection consists primarily of ledgers related to the companies operation and supples. Payments to oystermen, crabbers, and shuckers are noted by individual name. Some ledgers have widely mixed dates, which appear to be the result of "available space" ( if a particular year ledger was filled or not readily available, another year's ledger, with unused pages, was used). Contracts and agreements are also included on some ledger pages. <br />Additional loose materials include calculations and work sheets, (later transferred to the ledger and usually un-dated), letters from venders, shipping forms, personal letters, advertisements, government letters pertaining to requests for development of oyster grounds, and Corp of Engineers regulations. <br />Biographical/Historical Note: The materials in this collection were purchased at Dixon's Auction, Crumpton, Md. circa 2012. The book " Elliott's Island: the land that time forgot" ( A.M.Foley and Freddie T. Waller, 1999, Dogwood Ridge Books, Elliott, Md) notes that Gray and Waller was one of several shucking houses on the island. The book notes that the business was operated by James Prettyman Gray and his brother-in-law Thomas "Monk" Waller at the Low-er Creek from around 1917 to 1925. Foley and Waller indicate that the company was known primarily as an oyster house although records show wholesale crabmeat shipments to Baltimore. Records contained in these ledgers also show fur trapping, fish and seasonal fruit and vegetable packaging and shipments , although these appear to represent a minor endeavor compared to oysters and crabs. The Elliott's Island book provides a very limited description of this company. In 1925 Prettyman Gray attempted to sell the company to brothers Joseph, Ira, and Carl, but the sale was not completed. The book notes, "Eight years later the shucking house, long since idle, was washed out by the August Storm of 1933. Ira and Joe Gray picked up the pieces from the mouth of McCready Creek, trucked them home to Gate Point, and built I. Gray and Bro., a shucking house which em-ployed a number of local shuckers, including Phyllis Gray, Bertie Gray, Gertie Gray, and Elsie Woodland ( the ledgers include activity and payment to these and other workers). The brothers owned private oysterbeds (sic) off from Gates Point and Joe Gray owned the buyboat Lucky Lindy with which to supply the business" ( El-liott's Island, pp. 114-115).<br />The ledger entries end in the 1940's although the Elliott Bros. crabhouse continued under new ownership. Ches-ter and Jean Martinek ran the operation until it burned in 1962. Although Foley and Waller note the business was idle sometime during the period from 1925 to 1933, the ledgers indicate a variety of continuing operations.<br />4 boxes | No image URL. | View | |||
